Updates on Both of Us!

My Superman!Don's first new dosage of chemotherapy was last Saturday night. He did sleep though the night but by morning he was feeling the effects and was very sluggish. He did not get out of bed until it was time for me to leave for my riding lesson around noon. He walked me out and helped load the horses in the trailer. Thankfully they both just jumped in without incident. I was gone for several hours and when I came home I found him on his riding lawn mower. He had been mowing for a little more than an hour and excuse my language, but he looked like Holy Hell! He was very pale with red blotches on his face. He was just exhausted. I know how badly he wants to contribute to the farm work and do as much as he can, but I was not happy with him. He went upstairs, showered and crawled back into bed..where he stayed the rest of the day. Sadly , although Monday was a holiday for most of us, he had to work. Not only did he have to work, but he had to pull what is called a bell to bell (open to close shift) He told me that was the hardest day he had ever endured with his treatment yet...and I felt so sorry for him. By Wednesday though, thankfully his strength was returning a bit.

I still do not have a exact surgery date, but my pre-op tests are scheduled for Monday morning. I informed Don that he had to carry me up the stairs the day I come home from the hospital..just like newly-weds..umm if the bride drank too much maybe. ha ha..

Oh Good Grief!

I have fibroid tumors. I have had them for years and for years the largest one was about the size of a walnut. No biggie - right??? Well for some reason, even though I am Caucasian, pre-menopausal, and on the birth control pill - all factors that are suppose to keep them from growing, in the last year they have tripled in size so that now the largest one is a bit smaller than my fist!

Doctor doing an external abdominal exam:
"Oh My!" she said as she was pressing down on my abdomen. "I can easily feel them. How many do you have?"

"Three - I call them my triplets." I chuckled.

Still pressing, "Your uterus is so large it is the same size as a woman carrying a 20-22 week old fetus!"

I rolled my eyes. Well, I thought, at least I know why my pants don't fit like they used to!

While I was there, they did an internal exam, blood tests, urine test (to see if I was pregnant ...ha ha don't even go there!) and a biopsy. Ouch! It was a uterine biopsy, not a cervical one..and yes, it did hurt.

So it seems that I have to have a hysterectomy and hopefully soon - like next week. I cannot have it done vaginally because of the size of my uterus. That means my recovery time will be longer...:0( Since I am adopted and do not have a medical family history, I have opted to have my ovaries out as well.

Sooo - do you think things can get any more interesting?

Garden Pictures and Medical News

I thought you would enjoy looking at some pictures of Equus Villa - mostly some of my favorite garden projects while I tell you about our doctor's appointment.

We had to get up at 5am and leave by 6 to get all the way down to Pearland, which is where this doctor sees his patients on Tuesday's - Don's day off. We arrived 30 minutes early. The office was large, comfortable - much nicer than our first doctors office. The staff greeted us and the paperwork was rather simple.

After only 10 minutes or so, we were called into the office. Don was weighed and his blood pressure was taken. It was high...no surprise to us. We were then escorted into an exam room.

Don was actually seen by 2 separate doctors. The first, young, energetic and enthusiastic laid the plan they were going to take with Don. In a word - it is going to be aggressive!

Killing this Hepatitis virus in Don's blood is the highest priority and to do this we are going to have to take some risks.

Instead of taking Don off of the meds he is on, they are increasing them. The point of pulling him off this newly increased amount of Interferon is going to be a platelet count of less than 30,000. Our previous doctor only allowed him to go down to 40,000 before he reduced the medicine.

This new threshold frightens me and Don knows it. A less than 30,000 platelet count is dangerously low with awful side effects such as spontaneous bleeds and bruising. Any kind of accident even a small one can be a huge risk.

They ordered a cat scan on his liver and told him he will have to have one every 6 months for the rest of his life. The risk is high for liver cancer and to quote the doctor, "If something is going to show up, I want to find it when it is the size of a peanut and I can do something about it!"

They also ordered a scope. They are checking for varaces (sp??) When you have any type of cirrhosis, the liver can no longer handle the volume of blood it needs to filter the way it used to. The blood backs up, back into the spleen, which is why his is enlarged and into the portal vein. This scope will check the portal vein for damage. If this new increased Interferon drug treatment does not work, the next step is an even higher dose of Interferon, only it will be injected daily in a smaller doses. This is the drug that makes Don feel so ill. It is the same chemotherapy drug given to cancer patients. We are both up for the fight - no matter where it goes, but secretly I pray we do not have to go with the daily injections.

I am so proud of Don. All he said to the doctors after they presented the new treatment plan and procedures was "Lets do it!"

Lots of News..

Tomorrow is the day we go and see the new doctor. Our appointment is pretty far away (South of us) and it is early in the morning. It is Don's day off from work and I took the whole day off. After the appointment we are going to keep going South to Galveston for the day.I am not coming back to work until Thursday the 21st. So - just in case you don't hear from me for a few days - please don't worry!

I did go and pick up Oliver, the horse I mentioned in an earlier post. His registered name is Heaven and Earth! He is a doll! Don fell in love with him right away. I can't wait to ride him...kind of see what is under his hood! Maybe on Wednesday I can do that.

Joy adopted a dog...a REALLY REALLY BIG dog! He is a Bull Mastif. She named him Zeus and is a huge baby...although full grown. He is completely house trained and has the best of manners with other animals and people...thank goodness since she has her new house and all!

I took pictures this weekend - of Oliver, the roses I planted over the arbor and I even snapped a few of the youngest lamb - Lourdes. Did not get them downloaded onto the computer though...

It's Official!

There is no more denying it... I am a Horse NUT! Found these lamps and went all googly eyed over them..

..and of all things - garage doors?? Well sure - why not..then look like barn doors!oh well - I just can't help it! Once I prayed and I told God that either He needed to fix me - or tell me what to do with a particular horse...since it was HIS fault I was the way I was! ha ha...

Meet Oliver...

This is Oliver just last December in a show. Isn't he cute? Oliver's owner has Rheumatoid Arthritis and can no longer ride him. (That is not her in the picture.) She thought about driving Oliver, but he likes to be ridden, so Oliver may be coming to live at our farm soon.I'll keep you posted...but just a thought...Wouldn't he be cute in a sidesaddle!

Cecile Brunner Climbing Rose

We have an arched arbor that goes over a gate leading into the lambs pen. I have always wanted to grow climbing roses over the arbor and decided to use Cecile Brunner roses.

Cecile Brunner roses are small, about the size of modern day miniature roses and have as many petals as the beautiful cutting roses you would use.

They are prolific bloomers and can handle the South Texas heat. I bought 2 fairly mature bushes - so they can get established quicker and have a better chance of survival!Just Beautiful!!!~

Yeah - It is Fixed!!

Day's ago I received the most loving gift from Vivian. You can find her creative blog on my favorite bloggers list as Viv Out on a Whim! She made Don and I a toy version of Roman the baby lamb and then put him atop a handmade pin cushion! I squealed with joy when I saw him!!

..he looks just like the picture we took of him in the Bluebonnet field! He currently resides on my bedside table. I just can't stop touching him. Thank you Vivian!!! You will probably never know how much your gift meant to us!

Well...

As of this morning I am still not able to post any pictures...and I really am starting to go into withdrawal! ha ha

I am just learning about all of this ...so I don't know how you see how much you have used and how much is left. I also do not know if it makes a difference if you delete old pictures and posts...as to how much free storage you have left. Any information I learn, I will be happy to share though!

Now..until this is fixed.. Picture an adorable little white wool toy lamb jumping through flowers atop a blue pin cushion!...cause that is what I wanted to post today.

Little Roman's Toy...

picture is waiting patiently to be displayed on my blog....

I actually had to buy more storage space for my blog ...and it will take 24 hours to be installed! Grrrrrr.

Edited to add: Okay let me explain why this happened to me:

First of all - as I was adding more show photos to another blog I have (www.texassaddlehorse.blogspot.com) I got a pop up saying I was out of storage space. That other blog is used to post many many pictures from horse shows I cover - so that the people who show can get on the blog and take the pictures for their scrap books if they so desire. That blog is almost entirely photos with little to no text.

Each of us is allowed 1 GB (I think that is what it said) of memory for free. The allotted amount is the same "per person"..if you have 1 or 10 blogs...not 1 GB for each blog. Once that is used up, you have to buy more. I bought enough to increase mine to 10. It costs $20.00 per year. You can buy more, but once you buy it, you cannot get a refund..so I thought I would start out small.

Oh Hold!

My Camera is tied up at the moment with about 500 photos taken at the last horse show I covered. I cannot erase them, until I get them downloaded onto that show blog (for safety) and cannot use my camera until I get all of them off of my memory card....God forbid I have to buy a new one!

Anyway, here is my favorite photo taken from that show!

Other News:
Don is doing fine. Our appointment with the Liver Transplant Specialist is not until the 19th of May, so we have another 2 weeks to wait. He is experiencing injection sight tissue damage on his stomach...so we have to get more creative about where he gets those shots. It looks like 2 big, very swollen bee stings. Each is about 2 inches across in size. Yesterday he felt really good and got onto his riding lawn mower...until he was exhausted. The yard looks REALLY pretty though!

For everyone who asks about Don... THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart! It makes me feel so good when people ask about him!

Coming soon:
Photos of my little lamb that Vivian made for me...it is ADORABLE!!!

Hosting a Sidesaddle Clinic at Our Farm!

As many of you know, I am just starting to learn how to ride aside! I even started a new blog about it. www.ridingaside.blogspot.com It is here that I collect information and document all my own experiences with this new endeavor!Earlier this year, I joined the Texas Sidesaddle Association and was hoping to be able to attend a sidesaddle clinic. They usually have at least one per year. Well the President of the Association not only lost her farm during Hurricane Ike, but after they rebuilt it, her husband was transferred to another Texas city!

I volunteered to host the clinic at our farm! Oh Boy am I motivated now to get the farm looking ship shape! I should do this every spring!!!
