Away For a Few Days for Work..and Then..

Okay - so again I will be leaving town to cover a horse show. I will return next week. Did not want you to worry since I will not be posting on the blog.

Once I get back though, Don and I are going to start to plan our 'big' vacation. We only have 1 week...well he only gets 1 week of vacation..I get 6! We have thought about many different options including going on a cruise...but with cruises there are ports to visit and it would drive me crazy if I could not go exploring if Don was not feeling well...and he would probably make himself ill just wanting to do something to make me happy....soooo right now first place vote goes to going to and thoroughly enjoying only one place. Where is that place you might ask??? It is Santorini...a beautiful Greek Island!

Here are just a few pictures of this beautiful island..

..where the hotel is built into the side of the cliff..

..and every single room has a view like these!

You Have to See This!

A VERY talented artist is one of my favorite bloggers listed on my sidebar as "Viv Out On A Whim". I contacted her a few weeks ago and asked her to make a toy sized version of Roman for me! Have you ever seen anything so adorable??In case you are new to reading my blog, Roman is the first baby lamb born at our farm...and was rejected by his mother. We had to bottle feed him and Don is so attached to him - he is more like one of the dogs than just one of the sheep. I can't wait to hold my toy version of Roman romping through the blue flowers!!! Thank you Vivian.

What's Next?

So after our last doctors appointment and finding out about the Viral Load count, we were given the name and phone number of another doctor. Our current doctor is a Liver, Colon, Stomach specialist. The new doctor is a Liver, Infectious Disease and Liver Transplant specialist. Although for now, we will still see our original doctor, our first scheduled appointment with the new one is on May 18th.

Where Do I Start?

Yesterday was a very strange day dotted with both good and bad news. I guess the best way to tell it, is to just start at the beginning.

I was a bit uptight as I drove to work. All I could think about was getting the test results so we could move forward in one direction or another with Don's treatment. Although the doctors office did not open until 9, I put a call into the answering service anyway, requesting a call back.

When I walked into my work and approached my desk, I noticed something strange as well. People were gathered together in small groups talking softly between themselves.
I approached. "What is going on?"
"Mike's daughter died last night." one of the ladies responded.
My heart ached for him. Mike is a co-worker of mine. A jovial kind of a guy who works in a different department, but would always lend a hand to help anyone. His 25 year old daughter suffered from a life long birth defect that recently required her to have open heart surgery. We still do not know the exact details, but last I had heard, she was suffering with pneumonia.

Soon after I had settled into my desk, I got the call from Don telling me he had found the dead baby lamb. Since he was already dressed for work and heading out the door, I told him that I would bury it when I got home. This news made the anxiety of waiting for the doctors call even worse. I took a break and called the doctors office again.

"Hi, this is Julie and I am calling to get the Viral Load test results for my husband." I said trying to sound cheery.
"Oh hi Julie, let me get you the nurse. The doctor will not be in the office today until 2pm." the receptionist replied, and I was placed on hold.

A moment later Roxanne came on the line. Roxanne is our favorite nurse. She is kind, smart, attentive...and it is sooooo obvious that she has a crush on Don. I don't mind a bit. Because of that, she stays on top of everything she has control over and gets things done.
"Hi Julie." she said without hesitation."Dr. A got the results last night but he took them with him when he left. He will be in at 2 and I will have him call you then."
a short hesitation followed. I told her thank you before I hung up the phone. I knew in my heart the results were not good. If Roxanne knew the doctor had the results, I knew she knew what they said. The doctor had told us that we could call and get the results from the nurse - so for him to need to talk to us was not a good sign.

I not-so-patiently waited until 2pm before making another call. It confirmed what I had suspected. Don's Viral Load was 23,000. We were hoping for -0- which is referred to as "undetected" and at the most a count of 4,000. Dr. A told me to keep Don on the meds he was taking, but that he wanted us to go to a Hepatitis specialist as well. I jotted down the name and number of another doctor and ended the call.

I took a few deep breaths before I called Don. It is difficult to understand the strange processes of this disease. After all, he started at 400,000, so a drop down to 23,000 seems like a huge success after 12 weeks of meds - right?? Statistically though, you want the number to be -0- and even then you still need to stay on the meds for almost a year. You see, your blood saturates every part of your body...every organ and tissue from your head to your toes. If there is any hepatitis left, it will regenerate. Patients who have completed the treatments must return for Viral Load tests for years after treatment and sadly some again will test positive for HCV. It is a very difficult disease to conquer.

On my drive home, Don and I again talked. He asked me some more questions and I did my best to answer. He is so amazing to me. Not once does he turn his head to look back. He just keeps forging ahead. Don, if you are reading this .. I just want to tell you that you are my inspiration and I adore every part of you. I will never give up doing what I can to get us through this. God brought us together, kept us together and I have never been as happy as I am with you right now! I love you with all of my heart.

* * * * * * * * * *

When I got home, I changed clothes, ate and headed outside to do my chores. I grabbed the shovel and headed for the lambs pen to bury the little guy. I stopped dead in my tracks. There in front of me was a baby lamb standing in the herd. Honestly, my first thought was to question Don's ability to tell a dead animal from a live one! (sorry honey)..but in actuality, our 3rd ewe gave birth earlier that day. I still had to bury the dead lamb, but the day ended on a very happy note as we had a new little life on our farm! I will try and post some pictures tomorrow.

Sad Farm News...

Last night our dogs were barking quite a bit. Sometimes this can happen if there is a raccoon or opossum wandering by...but sadly last night that is not what was happening. Another one of our ewes gave birth and the lamb died. Don found it before he left for work. I am so angry with myself for not going outside to check on everything when the dogs awoke me...

You Would Think....Chapter 35

I left work yesterday at 3PM to meet Don at the doctors office. Traffic was light and with much time to spare I decided to make a quick stop to one of my favorite little shops. It is an old hole-in-the-wall pet store that sells among other things, beautiful exotic birds. I once purchased a Canary from the gentleman who ran this store and ever since I lost him, I have wanted another. He did have a chipper little boy canary but the $120.00 price tag steered me away from buying him. Not sure how to explain this, but I knew going there would calm me. It did.

After wandering through and enjoying all the birds, I left and still arrived at the office before Don. I sat in the atrium waiting for him. Sitting next to an older lady..my guess was she had to have been in her 70's, I struck up a conversation with her. It is a funny thing, how much I enjoy people. In the few short minutes we spoke, we shared our passions, family stories and when Don arrived and gave me a kiss on the cheek, she grinned and said, "He's a good one." I winked and nodded in agreement and we walked into the waiting room.

The office was close to full and it was almost an hour before we were called into the examining room. Moments later our doctor followed. As always, he greeted us with a smile and a hand shake. These appointments, to me, are like reading a suspense novel. You start with small clues and have to wait until the end to get the real questions answered!

"Did you go and see the dermatologist that I recommended?" He asked turning towards Don.
"No. Believe it or not, the rash is going away on its own." Don responded.
"Let me see." he said as he stood up from his chair.

Don stood up and started pulling his shirt out of his pants to show him. He turned each direction and pointed out the worst area which now only showed faint markings where the skin used to be completely raw.

"Wow! This is great. What did you use?" The doctor inquired.
"Just Vaseline Lotion."

Going back to the file, the doctor pulled the first paper out to check his counts.
"You seem to be stabilizing. Your white blood cell count is staying around 2600 and your platelet count is 51,000 this week. I am glad it is not going down anymore, but you still need to continue on with the weekly CBC's since both of those counts could change. We need to keep a close eye on all of this." He hesitated as he thumbed through more papers. Looking up he asked, "Did you get your viral load test done?"

"Yes." Don responded. "Three weeks ago and they lost it so I had to go back and have it drawn again 2 days later."

In a more hasty manner, our doctor paged through paper after paper in his file.

"It is not here! The Viral Load test is not in here! That lab drives me crazy!" he said as he opened the door. He looked at his watch and continued, "I'll bet no one is even there."

It was 5:45PM and I realized that again we were not going to get the answer to our question...

A Synopsis of My Life!

Yep - Here I am...clinging onto life with all of my might..my arms and legs gripping as hard as I can. The helmet and the chest protector represent the armor of God and the lamb is my life. If I get chunked off into the dirt..well, the armor will keep me from getting killed and I just have to throw myself back into the game!Oh - and that guy in the jersey...I guess he would be my guardian angel!

This morning I had my annual mammogram and an intrauterine ultrasound. I have fibroid tumors. This afternoon Don and I go to his doctors appointment to get his viral load test results.

A Beautiful Home!

I just returned from Oklahoma City where I was covering a horse show for the magazine I write for. While I was there, I was invited to a trainers birthday party hosted by one of his customers. I thought I might be in for a treat when I learned it was being hosted at the couples home...and was I right! This is what the front of their lovely home looked like.

..and here is the front porch..

..this guy was decorating the front porch!

The whole house was dotted with their love of American Saddlebreds. This is a comissioned painting of 3 of their horses!..

..that hangs in their formal dining room.

Look at these lovely desert dishes!

This is a couple who have been married to each other and raised their 3 daughters to young adults. I guess what I am saying is that they are not a blended family and their rich loving history is reflected through out thier home. This is the back staircase covered with decades of family photos.

What a unique way to display some winning ribbons!

More family photos.

The next 3 pictures are of their formal living room.

An upstairs bedroom.

A view into their lovely back yard.

The master bedroom.

A beautiful spread of food for the party.

Built in china cabnets - there were 2 of these.

A view from the front entrance..sorry it is dark.

Stunning fresh flowers!

More equestrian accents.

How cute is he?? This is Little Bit.

I caught him napping.

Here is the bar.

This gentleman was an amazing pianist and his music enveloped the guests.

This is the huge foyer.

Another room filled with a lifetime of loving memories and family history.

..another picture of the beautiful living room and that stunning flower arrangement!

..and my favorite party guest!Oh - and I almost forgot to mention..this house belonged to her Grand Parents and is quite old. You could only tell by the character of his home. It had so many details you just don't see in todays building plans.

No News Means Delays and Frustration..

Well because the lab lost the first sample of blood drawn for the Viral Load test, the results are not ready for us today. We will not find out for another week. An appointment has been scheduled for next Tuesday.

I took today off because Don has the day off and I have to leave tomorrow for the rest of the week. I am going to Oklahoma City to cover one of the biggest horse shows in my region. It is a fun show, but I have a feeling I will be a bit distracted.

I cannot take my laptop with me to this show, so I will not be posting again until next Monday. Thank you again for all of your love and support!

Good and Interesting Things!

Interesting:
Anyone out there watch 11Th Hour? Last night it was on TV just after CSI and they discussed something Don has. It is called Gilbert (pronounced Gill-Bear) Syndrome. About 5% of the population has it, mostly males and it causes the body to have a slower liver function response. Normally it does not cause any really problems - but can cause the person to have yellow instead of white around the eyes. Given a choice, I would rather that Don NOT have this though since he has other liver issues.

Good:
Remember the bed set I showed you yesterday? Well I went to Kohl's to see it. I will not lie, the fabric was not quite as nice as it looks in the photo. It has more of a shine to it than I would have preferred...but it was still very beautiful. The ad price said the king size comforter set was $199.00 and the coverlet was $99.00. The in store price of the comforter set was only $179.00. Then since I opened up a charge account (to be paid off in full next month!) I received an extra 15% off...AND they had another promotion of scratch off discounts and that gave me another 10% OFF!!! The total price with tax ended up being just over $200.00!

Ohhh - Pretty!

For Christmas last year, our daughter Joy bought us a new bed!! It was a huge surprise and it was a GOD SEND! Instead of a queen size, it was a king and it has a memory foam top on it, so when either of us moves the other hardly feels it...Well I bought a set of king size sheets - but everything else we are using is still queen size.Usually when I find something I really like...it is way way out of our price range...until I found this! What do you think?

BANGING HEAD AGAINST THE WALL....Chapter 32

OH MY GOD.... Just how incompetent can people be??? Don just got a call from the doctors office and the lab where all his blood work is done called to say that they LOST his blood! Just how do you lose blood anyway????

This was the blood drawn for the Viral Load test we are so impatiently waiting for. We are suppose to get the results next Tuesday. Will we get them with the new blood taken today??...I have no idea.

What is worse.. I have to leave next Wednesday to go to Oklahoma City to cover a horse show for 4 days. I don't want Don to get any news - good or bad, without both of us being there together.

Viral Load Test - Chapter 31

Don's Viral Load test was Monday the 29th of March. We will get the results on Tuesday April 7th.

Enlarge this so you can read it.How does this chart apply to Don?
1. + Weight: Don is not overweight - nor has he ever been.

2. + Race: Don is White.

3. + Age: I think since Don was 49 when we started this is a good thing.

4. - Sex: He is a He.

5. + Diabetes: Don does not have diabetes.

6. - Genotype: Don has the most difficult Hepatitis genotype to treat - Type 1.

7. + Viral Load: Don's viral load at the start of treatment was 400,000 - way below the level listed here!

8. ? Early Virologic Response: We did not have a Viral Load test done at 4 weeks - so we do not know yet how he is responding to the chemotherapy.

9. - Fibrosis Score: This would be low for him since his liver is in the early stages of cirrhosis.

10. - Dose of Drugs: Early on, we had to cut his Interferon injections by half since his platelet count dropped so low.

11. + Treatment duration: So far there has been no reason that he has had to stop his treatments.

Watches I Would LOVE to Own

Ralph Lauren is coming out with a line of equestrian inspired watches in the shape of a stirrup. I LOVE it....but with a starting price of $8800.00 it is HIGHLY unlikely that it will be gracing my arm!

This horse shoe watch design is made Catena. It is also WAY over a thousand dollars...but a girl can dream - huh???

...and not wanting to be selfish....these would look so awesome on Don!
