A friend sent this to me.  It is an ad from Montgomery Wards for day old chicks.  Click to enlarge.

During World War II my Mother was in Sears and heard this sort of peeping. Investigation provided a view of crates of baby chicks. She bought 600. Yes, 600. My Dad came home that night and said, "Jesus Christ Jan". After that short comment he and my Mother strung extension cords all around the living room with light bulbs hanging down into the chicken crates to keep the babies warm. And after awhile the chickens ended up in our basement in brooders. My Mother bought rejected buttermilk and mixed it with cracked corn to feed them. This was during meat rationing and she ended up selling them as fryers to a local restaurant. My job was plucking the feathers. Yes indeed, baby chicks are cute.

I love this. It is incredible to think about how much could be bought back then compared to now. Old ads like this are also so interesting to look at and comparing the prices is always entertaining.
