Oh My Gosh.. some things are sooooo expensive. Just getting to the point of being able to break ground on our new house is going to cost a fortune! We have been working with our local electric company about getting electricity run to the back part of our farm. Keep in mind now - we only have 26 acres... not 2600 or even 260! (which would not be uncommon in a state as large as Texas).
To have electric lines run back above ground the cost is (gulp) over $8,000.00. If we wanted it done underground ... which to an ignoramus like me seems like it would be easier and cheaper... NOT - it is over $11,000.00 and on top of that, we would have to hire someone to dig the trench AND put in something called j-boxes..whatever in the heck that is!
So today we are signing the contract to get the lines put in above ground... It seems that when we come across these unexpected higher expenses, the breaking ground date for the house slides a bit further away.... sigh. Even worse, the cost of this is in no way going to really increase the value of our property.. but I am going to stay positive.. I AM ... I SWEAR ... I AM!!

Wow, that is expensive. My parents looked into having the lines taken from the light pole in front of their barn up a hill to where they want to put a house, and in NC, a certain number of yards will be done for free by the electric company. I think to go up the hill was going to end up costing only $600. I guess it's all different from state to state!
We're going through something similar getting electricity to some land we have. Everything is so expensive!
It will all be worth it when you are living in your new house! Its really expensive here too, a septic tank in our county averages $25,000-$30,000.
